PACE chief opposes work of body on Karabakh

Head of the Council of Europe parliamentary assembly will host the leaders of Azerbaijani and Armenian delegations this week to discuss future work of PACE`s body on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

Jean-Claude Mignon made the announcement on Monday, on the first day of PACE`s summer session, answering a question on the future of the subcommittee on Nagorno Karabakh.

``A decision on the matter to be taken will be presented at a meeting of a PACE bureau. My position, not as PACE chairman, but my personal view, is that I am opposed to further work of the subcommittee,`` Mignon said.

Mignon noted that the OSCE Minsk Group is dealing with the Karabakh problem, saying that he would work to promote confidence in it, and added that the conflicting sides rely on the MG in the resolution of the long-standing conflict.

Mignon added that it was necessary to move forward in advancing proposals of the Minsk Group to resolve the conflict.

``They could put forward proposals that would help to resolve the conflict,`` he said. ``The Minsk Group should be more effective...I`m not interested in revitalizing the entities involved in resolving the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, and do not see a need for that. This would cause confusion in such a sensitive issue as the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.``

``My personal solution is that the Minsk Group should continue its work...From the beginning I have been against the establishment of the subcommittee, and my opinion has not changed,`` the PACE chairman said.

Mignon added, however, that if the PACE bureau decides that the subcommittee is to continue operating, he will treat that decision with respect.

The PACE subcommittee on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict was established in 2005 to oversee the implementation of the assembly`s resolution calling for a pullout of Armenian troops from the occupied Azerbaijani territories.
