NATO official praises co-op with Azerbaijan
NATO is pleased with its collaboration with Azerbaijan, an active contributor to the peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan, the alliance`s liaison officer for South Caucasus, William Lahue, told reporters in Baku last Friday.
``Relations between Azerbaijan and NATO are developing successfully, and the parties are interested in their further development. Boosting of relations is clearly demonstrated by the peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan,`` Lahue said.
Lahue said Azerbaijan previously allocated 1 million euros for training officers in the post-war country.
Lahue was attending an international conference, ``Azerbaijan and NATO Partnership, new prospects for cooperation after NATO Chicago Summit``, in Baku.
Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, the Ambassador of Romania, which represents the alliance in Azerbaijan, spoke about the outcome of the NATO summit.
``The Chicago Summit has once again reaffirmed the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. It expressed support for a peaceful settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict [between Azerbaijan and Armenia],`` the ambassador said. Member of the Azerbaijani delegation to NATO PA, MP Gudrat Hasanguliyev told the conference that NATO applies double standards toward Azerbaijan.
Although NATO stresses the commitment to a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict, Armenia`s armed forces continue to occupy a part of Azerbaijani territories, and ``nobody urges this country to stop the aggression``, Hasanguliyev said.
