Azerbaijan `established in Iran`s territory`, agency claims

An official Iranian news agency has issued a provocative report saying Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was established in 1918 allegedly in the territory of Iran. The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) report was released over May 28, Azerbaijan`s Republic Day.

It said that though most of Azerbaijan`s territory was part of Iran and the separated territory of Iran to the north of Araz River was called by different names, Iran ``did not object to the title of the new state``.

According to IRIB, the Republic of Azerbaijan was established ostensibly in the separated territory of Iran on the basis of Gulustan and Turkmanchay agreements signed in the first half of the 19th century, which the agency called ``shameful`` treaties.
