Parliament passes changes to election laws
Azerbaijan`s parliament adopted amendments to the Electoral Code at its session last Friday.
According to the changes, election commissions should provide information to the media about election candidates within 24 hours after their registration. This term was defined as 48 hours in the previous legislation.
Under the amended Electoral Code, the decision on each complaint received by the election commission during the elections is to be taken within two days and presented to the plaintiff if less than 30 days is left until election day. So far, the decision was to be made within three days, and, if the complaint is received on election day or the following day, it was to be taken immediately.
Under the changes, complaints over the decisions of election commissions should be considered in courts within two days -- instead of the previous three days -- if less than 30 days remain until election day. Complaints received on election day and the following day must be reviewed immediately.
According to one of the amendments passed in parliament, the expert`s decision on the complaint is declared immediately after its adoption or published together with the decision of the relevant election commission (available on the website) no later than 6 p.m. and submitted to the plaintiff. This term was defined as 24 hours under the previous legislation.
Under another amendment, official announcement of referendum results will be published by the Central Election Commission (CEC) no later than 30 days after the voting. Previously, this period was 20 days.
Also, the amended Electoral Code stipulates that the CEC will announce the results of municipal elections no later than 25 days from the date of the election. This term was previously 30 days.
