Al-Qaeda-linked militants arrested
Azerbaijan`s National Security Ministry says security forces have arrested a group of militants linked to Al-Qaeda.
The ministry said in a statement last Wednesday that the militants were planning to carry out a series of terrorist attacks in Azerbaijan. They were masterminding explosions in mosques and other shrines in a bid to disrupt stability in the country.
The statement said the members of the group had studied in Islamic schools in Syria and received military training in Pakistan and later in Iran. Afterwards, they are said to have fought international coalition forces in Afghanistan as part of the Islamic Jihad group.
Officials did not say how many suspects were arrested nor when the arrests were made.
