Swedish, Belgian parliaments to table resolutions on Karabakh
Resolutions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh are expected to be discussed in the parliaments of Sweden and Belgium in the coming months.
The Swedish parliament is due to table such a document on April 10, according to Swedish Azerbaijanis Congress chairman Emil Mirzoyev. It will be the first resolution on the issue to be discussed in the country`s legislature.
``First, each political party represented in parliament will hold internal discussions regarding the resolution. Afterwards, the positions of all parties and the purpose of the resolution will be presented [to parliament] in writing,`` Mirzoyev said.
In May, a draft resolution on the Karabakh issue will be put on discussion in the Belgian parliament, Belgian MP David Geerts told the Baku-based APA news agency.
According to Geerts, the text of the document will be ready in two to three weeks and discussions will be held in this regard with other Belgian lawmakers.
``The aim of the resolution is to direct the government`s attention to supporting the process of peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict,`` Geerts said. ``The OSCE Minsk Group is brokering the peace process, but the conflict has not been resolved during 20 years of its activity. I believe discussions in the House of Representatives on the issue will take place in May or June.``
The Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 over Armenia`s territorial claims. The ensuing war claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced up to a million Azerbaijanis. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994.
Ethnic Armenians are running a self-proclaimed republic in Nagorno Karabakh. Its so-called independence, declared at the time of the Soviet collapse in 1991, has not been recognized by the world community.
Peace talks, brokered by Russia, France and the U.S. through the
Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.
