French envoy`s spouse faces drug charges

The spouse of the French Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Serbian playwright Biljana Srbljanovic has been charged with illegal possession of cocaine, according to the Serbian Telegraf website.

A top court in Belgrade has so far been unable to inform Srbljanovic of the formal indictment because she had given the wrong home address to the court and police, the website said.

Dusica Ristic, the spokesperson for the Higher Court in Belgrade, has said the court could not go ahead with the trial as Srbljanovic has not been familiarized with the indictment.

Telegraf quoted a reliable source as saying that by not indicating a valid home address, Srbljanovic was trying to avoid endangering the career of her husband, Gabriel Keller, a former French ambassador to Serbia who currently serves as France`s envoy to Azerbaijan.

Srbljanovic was reportedly detained on December 1, 2011 while buying cocaine from street vendors. Police sources said she bought the drugs twice and paid 60 euros for them each time.

The French embassy in Baku has declined comment on the Serbian media reports.
