Azeri vice-speaker: Guba protests not ‘mass riots’

Parliament Vice-Speaker Bahar Muradova has said it would be wrong to describe the protests in the northern Azerbaijani region of Guba held against the region’s mayor as mass riots, an allegation made by some opposition forces.

"It is normal when citizens express their discontent over any given issue and social problems, and it is everyone’s constitutional right," Muradova told journalists on Friday.

Violent protests took place in Guba, 168 km north of the capital Baku, on Thursday, with over a thousand people taking to the streets to demonstrate against the mayor over his insulting remarks that recently appeared on YouTube videos. The protesters demanded an apology and resignation of Rauf Habibov, who called Guba residents "traitors" for selling land cheaply to Azerbaijanis from other regions.
