Azerbaijan ‘will not be foothold’ for attack on Iran
Azerbaijan will not be used as a foothold in case of any military operation against neighboring Iran, the country's First Vice-Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov told journalists on Friday.
"Azerbaijan is interested in resolving such issues through negotiations," Asgarov said.
The U.S. and other Western countries accuse Iran of seeking nuclear weapons under the guise of its peaceful nuclear energy program. Tehran denies the charges, saying that its nuclear program is aimed at meeting the country's electricity needs.
A number of countries and organizations have imposed sanctions against Iran, urging it to ensure full transparency of its nuclear program and prove that it is exclusively for peaceful purposes. The United States extended the sanctions list against Iran by introducing additional measures against the country's intelligence and security ministry in mid-February.
At present, there are four resolutions of the UN Security Council imposing sanctions on Iran.
