MPs see Zhirinovsky`s anti-Azeri statements as election campaign move
The statements by Russian presidential candidate, leader of Russian Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR), Vladimir Zhirinovsky, primarily aim to secure a large number of votes at the March 4 elections, Azerbaijani MP Fazayil Aghamali told the Baku-based Trend news agency.
Zhirinovsky, who is known for his controversial statements, recently once again defended Armenia, saying that upon its request, Russia would "destroy everything all the way to the Persian Gulf".
"Zhirinovsky's statements are mainly aimed at obtaining a large number of votes, but on the other hand, they stem from his political principles," said Aghamali, chairman of Azerbaijan’s pro-government Ana Vatan party. "He is one of the politicians who have always had an anti-Turkish and anti-Azerbaijani position."
"We can't expect any other statements from Zhirinovsky," Aghamali added.
MP Aydin Mirzazade believes Zhirinovsky’s remarks are not worth paying attention.
"Zhirinovsky is one of the few politicians whose words are not taken seriously. He is notorious not only in Russia but also abroad," Mirzazade told Trend.
