Baku urges ‘mechanism to enforce UN SC decisions’
Azerbaijan deems it important to create a mechanism for enforcing the decisions taken by the UN Security Council, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told the G20 foreign ministers in Mexico, stressing the importance of implementing the UN resolutions on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
"Azerbaijan faced a lack of mechanisms to execute decisions adopted by the UN Security Council, namely, the four resolutions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict. The UN SC should show respect for its decisions, and it is necessary to create mechanisms for their enforcement," Mammadyarov said addressing an informal G20 ministerial.
Mammadyarov said the UN should have more influential credentials, which is one of the main conditions for ensuring global and regional security, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
The UN SC’s resolutions urging an unconditional pullout of Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories have not been implemented so far.
The Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 due to Armenia’s territorial claims. Azerbaijan and Armenia waged a brutal war which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced up to a million Azerbaijanis. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994. Peace talks, brokered by Russia, France and the U.S. through the OSCE Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.
Azerbaijan was represented at a meeting of G20 foreign ministers for the first time on February 18-20 in Los Cabos, Mexico. Mexico presides over the G20 this year.
In addition to the G20 member countries, Algeria, Austria, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Norway, Singapore, Spain and the UAE were invited to the meeting.
Mammadyarov in his speech also touched upon consistent development and poverty eradication, stressing Azerbaijan's achievements in this area.
South African Republic’s foreign minister called on developed countries to assist poor countries in Africa, following the example of Azerbaijan.
In Mexico Mammadyarov met with the US secretary of state, the foreign ministers of Spain, Colombia, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Mexico, Turkey, Benin, Chile, South Africa, Italy's deputy foreign minister and the US special envoy for Eurasian energy, as well as head of the African Union delegation.
