Azerbaijan launches large-scale military drills

Azerbaijani armed forces have launched another large-scale military exercises involving ground troops and air force on the frontline with Armenia, Azerbaijan’s defense ministry said.

Cutting-edge military machinery and weaponry purchased by Azerbaijan in past years are being used in the exercises. The drills, overseen by Defense Minister, Col.-Gen. Safar Abiyev, will last till the weekend, the ministry said.

Azerbaijan faces a long-standing conflict with neighboring Armenia. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s, about 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces. Baku has repeatedly warned it would use force to free its occupied land if OSCE-brokered peace talks do not yield results.
