UN official’s mother brutally killed in Baku

The mother of the United Nations food agency’s representative in Baku has been brutally killed.

Elmira Ismayilova, 73, was found dead in her home with multiple stab wounds. After killing the hostess, the unknown attackers set her home on fire to hide the traces of their crime.

Investigators are working to establish the motive of the crime.

Fuad Huseynov, head of the UN World Food Program’s (WFP) local representation, told the Baku-based ANS TV channel that first, it was merely believed that fire had broken out.

"Everybody thought this was a fire," Huseynov said. "My mother died in the kitchen. [But] a forensic expertise revealed that she had 15 to 16 knife wounds. Her body and the apartment were burned."

According to Ismayilova’s relatives, it appeared that the criminals had not broken into her home to rob it.

"Nothing, no items were stolen," Huseynov said, adding, "My mother was a quiet person and was not in conflict with anyone."
