Russian-made taxis to be banned in Baku from May

The use of Russian-made vehicles for taxi service in the Azerbaijani capital Baku will be banned from May 1, the Transport Ministry spokesman has said.

"Drivers providing taxi services after this date without a proper license and using Russian-made automobiles will face a 100 manat ($128) fine in accordance with the Code of Administrative Offenses," Namig Hasanov said. He added that all taxies operating in Baku have to be of white color with the exception of London cabs that recently began to be used.

Hasanov said the owners of a total of 5,000 cars are to be granted licenses to provide taxi services.

The ministry spokesman added that 1,000 TX4 London cabs are currently used in Baku, and their number is expected to triple by the end of 2012.
