Traffic of trucks at Azeri-Iranian border restored

The traffic of trucks stopped at customs checkpoints on Azerbaijan-Iran border has been restored, according to the head of the cargo terminal in the borderline city of Astara.

"The problem was resolved after talks held between the two sides," Rafael Abdullayev told the Baku-based APA news agency.

Iranian customs officers have blocked tens of trucks arriving from neighboring Azerbaijan in the past few days on the grounds of their incompliance with relevant standards. Accordingly, the Azerbaijani side was not allowing trucks from Iran to cross the border.

Drivers who were stuck on the border explained this by recent diplomatic tension between the two countries.

Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies said in mid-January they had seized two Azerbaijani nationals who planned terror attacks on foreign public figures in Baku, reportedly including Israeli citizens, which were ordered by a resident of Ardabil who has connections with the Iranian secret service. Further, Iran issued a strong protest to Azerbaijan, claiming it allows Israeli secret service Mossad to carry out anti-Iranian activity on its soil.
