Azerbaijan aids Myanmar relief efforts
The Azerbaijani government has allocated aid worth $500,000 to
Myanmar for the elimination of the aftermath of a recent
cyclone.
The amount, allotted from the reserve fund envisioned in the 2008 state budget, will be transferred through the Foreign Ministry to Myanmar's official bodies, the Cabinet of Ministers said.
The Cyclone Nargis hit the country last Tuesday. The official death toll from the calamity has risen by nearly 3,500 to 31,938. Nearly 30,000 others remain missing, and the UN has said the death toll could reach 100,000 or higher. The flow of international aid has increased in the past days, but relief agencies say much more is needed to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.
1.2-1.9 million people have been affected by the destruction wreaked by the tropical storm and subsequent overflow of the Irrawaddy river.
