Azeri integrity not up for disputes: UK minister
A UK minister has said Azerbaijan's territorial integrity was not a matter of disputes, in a statement on the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict the country faces with Armenia.
"Upper Garabagh is Azerbaijan's territory. This is known and recognized not only by Britain but the entire world," UK Minister for Europe Jim Murphy told reporters on a visit to Baku last week.
He noted that the two countries should resolve the long-standing conflict in peace, and this would give an incentive to the development of the region.
"We would like to always see Azerbaijan as a prolific and developed country. To accomplish that goal, the country should work to solve outstanding problems, in particular, seek a peaceful and speedy solution to the Garabagh conflict," Murphy said.
The minister said London welcomed the service of Azerbaijani peacekeepers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"I believe this step by Azerbaijan is a great contribution to the fight against global terrorism," he added.
Murphy said democratic development and human rights protection were also mooted during his discussions with Azerbaijani officials. He said holding a free and fair presidential election in October was pivotal to secure a bright future for the country, adding that London was ready to assist in accomplishing that goal.
