Baku says Armenian defense chief lies on ceasefire breaches

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry has said Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian lies when he talks about ceasefire violations by Azerbaijan’s armed forces.

"Everyone in Azerbaijan and Armenia, and even in the Armenian Defense Ministry knows that Ohanian is lying," the ministry’s deputy spokesman, Teymur Abdullayev, told the Baku-based Trend news agency on Thursday while commenting on the Armenian defense minister's recent statement.

"Probably, Ohanian himself does not believe what he says, so there is no need to comment further on his absurd assertion," Abdullayev said.

Ohanian was quoted by Armenian media as saying that Armenian troops open fire only in retaliation to Azerbaijani armed forces’ shooting.

The two South Caucasus republics fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a fragile ceasefire was signed in 1994. Peace talks brokered by US, Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far, and clashes on the frontline continue.
