Norwegian FM criticizes journalists' jailings
Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store has criticized the
situation with media freedom in Azerbaijan, saying journalists in
the country worked "in the conditions of uncertainty".
"The leading journalists' being in prison in any given country, by itself, clearly shows the way things are there," he told the www.abcnyheter.no website while commenting on the outcomes of his visit to Baku.
The story posted on the website said heated discussions were held on the attitude toward journalists during the minister's meetings.
Store said Azerbaijani officials maintain that the jailed journalists were convicted on legitimate grounds. "But I told them quite clearly that being represented in the Council of Europe and jailing journalists at the same time is inconsistent."
Three journalists are still jailed in the country.
