Azeri sector of Caspian freezes

Waters in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea have frozen due to cold weather observed in the past few days.

The freeze hit the northern parts more, with the thickness of ice being 30 centimeters to 2 meters.

According to the ecology ministry, Caspian waters last heavily froze near the Russian coast in 1920 and 1953, and chunks of ice reached as far as the Azerbaijani capital Baku.

The Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian is considered the middle part of the basin and freezing there is very rare.
