Azeri lawmakers urge France to stop mediation on Karabakh

Azerbaijani parliament members have put forward an initiative to expel France from the OSCE Minsk Group brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict as a sign of protest against the law criminalizing the denial of the so-called "Armenian genocide" recently passed by France.

Commenting on the proposal, made at a session of the Azerbaijani parliament on Wednesday, Speaker Ogtay Asadov said France "has lost the moral, rather than the legal right" to co-chair the Minsk Group.

"We must define the legal means for estranging France from its co-chairmanship," he said. "This issue does not depend on our wishes."

The Minsk Group, also co-chaired by the United States and Russia, has been mediating peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire following a lengthy war in the early 1990s.
