British envoy meets Azeri opposition leader
British Ambassador Peter Bateman discussed socio-political situation, democracy and human rights in Azerbaijan with the leader of major opposition Musavat party, Isa Gambar, on Tuesday.
The discussed issues included freedom of assembly, free elections and so-called political prisoners, Musavat said.
Bateman said British diplomats planned to meet with the party’s official, Arif Hajili, and other alleged political prisoners.
The ambassador enquired about Azerbaijan’s integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions and Musavat’s stance to that end.
Discussions also centered on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh and the French Senate's approval on Monday of a bill criminalizing denial of the alleged genocide of Armenians by Ottoman Turks during World War I.
