Reports claim Azeri soldier captured on frontline

An Azerbaijani soldier has been captured by Armenian armed forces on the contact line of the two countries’ troops, Armenian media reported. The reports referred to the POW as Mammadbaghir Akhundzada.

But Azerbaijan’s state body for captives and hostages said it was unaware of the incident.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a fragile ceasefire was signed in 1994. Peace talks brokered by US, Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far, and clashes on the frontline continue.
