Azerbaijan for nuclear-free zone in South Caucasus

Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev has offered to create a nuclear-free zone in the South Caucasus. The proposal was made at a meeting with a delegation led by deputy chairman of Georgian parliament Fridon Todua in Baku, the Azerbaijani energy ministry said Wednesday.

Spokesman for the ministry, Azer Mansimli, said Aliyev had informed the Georgian delegation of Azerbaijan's concern over Armenia’s obsolete Metsamor nuclear power plant which poses a threat to all regional countries. Azerbaijan called on Georgia to support its calls for closure of the power plant.

The Georgian vice-speaker welcomed the proposal, saying he would inform the country’s government agencies and public about Baku’s initiative upon his return to Tbilisi.
