British Council launches project on inter-community dialogue in Azerbaijan

British Council Azerbaijan jointly with its local partners, Economic Research Center and Human Rights Foundation, has launched a new EU-funded project on inter-community dialogue and cooperation towards community development.

The two-year project will be implemented in north-western regions of Azerbaijan. Its main goal is to support long-term development of municipalities by increasing civil participation.

Attending a presentation of the project, head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan Roland Kobia, British Council Country Director Paul Clementson and a representative of the organization George Burt briefed the participants on the project.

"This is a 256,000 euro project [aiming] to create a bridge between people and municipalities, between civil society organizations and local self-government bodies," Kobia told journalists Friday.

He said the effectiveness of the project will be increased due to the cooperation of different partners such as the EU, non-governmental organizations and the Azerbaijani government.

The project covers activities towards development of civil society organizations, preparation of citizen participation strategy, and implementation of pilot projects relating to the annual activity of municipalities in four northern regions of the country.

85 percent of funding under the project will be provided by the EU and 15 percent - by British Council and its local partners.
