Iranian students slam Azeri govt

Iranian students have issued a statement claiming that the Azerbaijani government is pursuing anti-Islamic policy, Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

In a statement, members of a Tehran University student organization and a school based in the holy city of Qom said that though 92 percent of Azerbaijan’s population are Muslims, the authorities are defying Islam by shutting down mosques and jailing Islamic leaders.

"The Azerbaijani government should learn a lesson from history, review [neighboring] Iran’s history from 1963 to the 1979 Islamic Revolution," the statement says. "Look at the fate of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Hosni Mubarak, Ben Ali, Abdullah Saleh and others."

The students urged Iran’s foreign ministry to step up diplomacy to protect the rights of Azerbaijani Muslims and achieve release of the jailed Islamists, referring to the recent convictions of Azerbaijan Islamic Party leaders on charges of planning terror attacks.
