US envoy leaves Azerbaijan over lack of Senate approval

US Ambassador Matthew Bryza left Azerbaijan on Tuesday after the completion of his tenure, US embassy spokesman Keith Bean has said.

Bryza, President Barack Obama's nominee, had to wrap up his diplomatic mission after the US Senate did not approve him for the post. On December 29, he told a news conference in Baku that if his ambassadorial approval was not voted upon in the legislature in the coming days, he would have to leave the country on Tuesday.

Though Bryza was nominated for the post of US ambassador to Azerbaijan in May 2010, his final approval had been stalled by lawmakers for months due to the opposition of several pro-Armenian senators claiming his pro-Azerbaijani bias. The US president in December 2010 bypassed the usual Senate confirmation process to appoint Bryza. However, under US laws, the so-called recess appointment was temporary, lasting only one year, until the Congressional session ended in late 2011.

Charge D’Affaires Adam Sterling will represent the United States in Azerbaijan until a new envoy is appointed.
