NATO concerned over S. Caucasus conflicts - Romanian envoy

NATO is concerned over protracted conflicts in the South Caucasus region, says the Romanian ambassador in Baku, who represents the alliance in Azerbaijan.

"As a country neighboring the region, Romania is interested in the resolution of these conflicts," Daniel Cristian Ciobanu said. "At the same time, we support Euro-Atlantic integration of the regional countries."

The ambassador termed Azerbaijan as NATO’s important ally, saying that Romania was ready to arrange the alliance’s dialog with the South Caucasus republic.

Ciobanu said further that from 2012 all NATO allies will gain access to the organization’s new plan of activities that includes more than 1,600 events.

"Within this framework, new, two-year plans on individual partnership with partner states will be drafted," Ciobanu added.

Azerbaijan forged relations with the alliance by joining the North Atlantic Council in 1992. Baku’s cooperation with Brussels was boosted in 1994 with the country’s joining NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) program. Also, the country is collaborating with the bloc within the NATO Individual Partnership Plan.
