Protesters in Baku slam Ahmadinejad, Sarkozy
Representatives of an Azerbaijani nationalist party protested at Iran and France on Wednesday, chanting slogans critical of the two countries’ leaders.
Outside the Iranian embassy in Baku, the Azerbaijan National Democratic (Bozgurd) Party’s (ANDP) members condemned President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s recent visit to Armenia and Tehran’s concluding economic and political agreements with the country, which has occupied over 20 percent of neighboring Azerbaijan's territory since a war in the early 1990s.
The protesters chanted slogans like "Ahmadinejad is an enemy of Muslims" and "Russians, Persians and Armenians are enemies of Turks".
Iran and Armenia signed six agreements during Ahmadinejad’s visit to the South Caucasus republic over the weekend and agreed to bring their bilateral trade to $1 billion a year, a boost from $270 million reported in 2010 and $300 million in 2011.
During their picket outside the French embassy in Baku, ANDP activists condemned the recent passage of French legislation criminalizing denial of the alleged genocide of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey. They chanted "Sarkozy is Armenian – enemy of Turks", "Down with hate toward Turks in France" and "French companies, get out of Azerbaijan".
