Russian govt cites progress in Karabakh settlement in 2011

Russia believes agreement was reached on a number of issues of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh in 2011, according to the Russian foreign ministry.

The ministry noted in a report which assessed major political events abroad this year that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian leader Serzh Sargsyan met with their Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev’s mediation in March and June in Sochi and Kazan.

"At those meetings, it was possible to reach mutual understanding on numerous entangled issues concerning the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement," says the report, which was posted on the ministry’s website.

Russia co-chairs the OSCE Minsk Group mediating the peace process, along with the United States and France.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a brutal war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including the Nagorno Karabakh region, has since been occupied by Armenian armed forces. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
