Azerbaijan ranks fifth among importers of ground troops’ weapons from Russia
Azerbaijan was the fifth biggest importer of weaponry and ammunition from Russia for its ground troops this year, head of the Moscow-based think tank Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade, Igor Korotchenko, was quoted by the Russian RIA Novosti news agency as saying.
This summer Azerbaijan began manufacturing AK-74M submachine guns under the Russian license for testing. This was followed by serial production of the weapons in the last quarter of 2011, according to a 10-year agreement signed with Russia’s state arms corporation Rosoboronexport. Annual production is up to 120,000 submachine guns. The Russian side is executing the contract through Concern Izhmash OJSC.
