Azerbaijan to get sterilization unit based on nuclear technology
Azerbaijan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed an agreement in Austria on Wednesday to create a sterilization unit based on nuclear technology, head of the Azerbaijani institution dealing with radiation issues, Adil Garibov, told Radio Liberty.
"We are implementing a joint project on setting up a sterilization unit in Azerbaijan. A relevant trilateral agreement has been signed – among the manufacturer, our Institute and IAEA," Garibov said.
The purchase of sterilization equipment has been funded by the IAEA. Hungary's Institute of Isotopes has won a tender announced by Azerbaijan for its installation. The sterilization unit is to be delivered to Azerbaijan next year.
After the facility starts to operate in Azerbaijan it will be possible to prevent imported grain, potatoes, other foods and agricultural goods from spoilage. This unit can also be used in the petrochemicals sector.
