Top official: Azeri opposition ‘under impact’ of world events

Some opposition parties in Azerbaijan act under the influence of world developments instead of "relying on the people's will", Presidential Administration department head Ali Hasanov told journalists on Wednesday.

"We see it in the Azerbaijani opposition's actions after the events that have occurred in Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt and other countries over the past three years," Hasanov said.

He said it is necessary to rely on the people's will to achieve any success in Azerbaijan.

"Their desires and plans are doomed to fail unless they meet the people's demands," Hasanov said. "Therefore, we have never equated the processes ongoing outside Azerbaijan to those inside the country. We are not looking for any links between them.

"For example, what does Azerbaijan have to do with a small conflict in Kazakhstan or some phenomena in the domestic social and political developments in Russia?"

Hasanov said every country has its own "mechanism of internal regulation", which builds on the "authorities-people" relationship.

"State power is strong and stable if it relies on the people's will and reflects their social and economic needs and expectations. In such a society, anyone's provocative attempts are doomed to fail. There is unanimity between the government and people of Azerbaijan today. The authorities lean on the Azerbaijani people's will," Hasanov added.
