Caspian states agree on sturgeon fishing only for scientific research –official

Sturgeon fishing in the Caspian Sea will be allowed only for scientific research purposes in 2012, Azerbaijani Deputy Ecology Minister Rauf Hajiyev has told Azerbaijan’s APA news agency.

Hajiyev said the decision was passed at a meeting of the water and biological resources commission being held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku with the participation of representatives from all Caspian littoral states - Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Iran.

Regarding the term of the ban on industrial sturgeon fishing, Hajiyev said the coastal nations’ taskforce is dealing with the issue.

"Kazakhstan’s president has offered a five-year moratorium. But since sturgeon fish have longer lives, we would not see the results for five years. Therefore, it would be more effective to enact the ban for 10 years or longer."

Hajiyev recalled that a ban on sturgeon fishing has been enforced in the past – in 2006-2009.
