Jailed Azeri officer’s extradition from Hungary ‘possible’ - court chair

Extradition of Azerbaijani officer Ramil Safarov jailed in Hungary is possible if the two countries reach a relevant agreement, Azerbaijani Supreme Court chairman Ramiz Rzayev has said.

"Safarov’s extradition is an interstate issue, and Azerbaijan is addressing it," Rzayev told the press Wednesday. "If the two countries agree upon it, the officer’s extradition may be carried out."

Safarov, 34, was handed down a life sentence without the right to a parole for 30 years on charges of killing Armenian serviceman Gurgen Markaryan, who insulted the Azerbaijani flag during a NATO course in Budapest. The Azerbaijani public condemned the Hungarian court’s harsh sentence, which was pronounced in April 2006 after a lengthy trial.

According to Rzayev, the lack of an extradition treaty with Hungary "caused certain problems with this issue" in the past.

He added: "I don’t think that political aims could play any role in his extradition to Azerbaijan. The problem has to be resolved exclusively in the legal realm."
