Aliyev approves amended law on religion
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has signed an amended law toughening religious restrictions that was passed by parliament in November.
The amendments, introduced to the Code on Administrative Offenses, define activity which is deemed as violation of domestic laws on religion. The changes forbid citizens’ study abroad in religious institutions without authorization of the relevant executive body; exchange of clerics; and conduct of Islamic worship ceremonies by the people who received religious education in other countries.
The amended law also bans sales of religious literature, items and other materials relating to religion outside specialized outlets.
Foreign nationals and stateless persons are not allowed to conduct religious propaganda and will face criminal charges if they violate the ban.
