Azerbaijan says won’t be ‘foothold’ for military strike on Iran

Azerbaijan would not allow Western countries to use its territory as a foothold in case of a military incursion into Iran, an Azerbaijani presidential aide has said.

"Using Azerbaijani territory against Iran and Iranian territory against Azerbaijan is unacceptable," Ali Hasanov, the Presidential Administration official in charge of social and political affairs, said last week after wrapping up a visit to the neighboring country.

Hasanov said Baku hopes the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program would be settled peacefully.

Iran’s nuclear program and its potential consequences have long been a concern for the international community. Tehran denies allegations that it is seeking atomic weapons, saying its nuclear program is peaceful and mainly aims to generate electricity to meet its growing energy needs. The West does not rule out a military incursion into Iran as an alternative to the existing sanctions.

An incursion into Iran would undoubtedly affect neighboring states, causing exodus of thousands of people to borderline countries. As a result, such an attack could bring about a humanitarian crisis in Turkey and Azerbaijan.
