Medvedev to host informal CIS summit
Leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member countries are due to hold an informal meeting on December 20 in Moscow devoted to the 20th anniversary of the ex-Soviet bloc, the CIS Executive Committee said on its website.
"Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has invited his counterparts to the informal summit to review what has been done over the past 20 years and explore prospects for the future," CIS Executive Secretary Sergey Lebedev has said.
Established after the Soviet Union collapse in 1991, the CIS consists of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Ukraine has not ratified the CIS Charter but participates in its activities, while Turkmenistan has observer status.
