Karabakh ministerial due in Vilnius next week

Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers are scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the OSCE ministerial council due December 6-7 in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius to discuss the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijani media reported.

The meeting of Elmar Mammadyarov and Edward Nalbandyan is expected to be attended by the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group brokering Karabakh settlement – Robert Bradtke of the United States, Igor Popov of Russia and the new French co-chair Jacques Faure. Mammadyarov and Nalbandyan’s meeting with their counterparts from the mediating countries may take place as well.

Azerbaijan and Armenia waged a brutal war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including Nagorno Karabakh, has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since the 1994 ceasefire. Numerous rounds of Minsk Group-brokered negotiations have been fruitless so far.
