Four Azeris among world’s most influential Muslims

Four Azerbaijanis, including the country’s president and clerical leader, are among the world’s 500 most influential Muslims, a Jordan-based research group has found.

Besides President Ilham Aliyev and Caucasus Muslims Office chairman, Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazada, the rating, published by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, includes the Juma mosque’s Imam Haji Ilgar Ibrahimoghlu and renowned Mugham (folk music) singer Alim Gasymov.

President Aliyev was ranked 104th in the list, while Pashazada and Ibrahimoghlu were each rated 96th, and Gasymov – 136th.

The Jordanian research group has compiled the rating of influential Muslims since 2009. This year’s rankings were topped by Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz. He is followed by Morocco's King Mohammed VI and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, ranked fifth.

The rating was drawn up based on a selection among the people who stand out on 14 key areas of activity spanning from politics to human rights, sports and culture.

The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre is an independent research entity affiliated with the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought. It is an international Islamic non-governmental, independent institute headquartered in the Jordanian capital of Amman.
