Local election re-runs due in Azerbaijan Wednesday
Election re-runs and additional polls for 464 seats in 330 municipalities will be held in Azerbaijan on Wednesday, according to the country’s senior electoral body.
1,549 candidates will contest the vacant seats in the local bodies, Mazahir Panahov, the Central Election Commission (CEC) chairman, told a news conference Tuesday.
According to him, among the candidates are members of nine political parties, including the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party (YAP), pro-government Ana Vatan party, opposition-leaning Civil Solidarity Party, pro-opposition United Azerbaijan Popular Front and Democratic Reform Parties, opposition Umid (Hope) Party, and others. 709 independent nominees will stand in the election as well.
305 of the election candidates, or around 19.7 percent, are women, Panahov said.
1,155,864 voters will cast their ballots in 1,169 polling stations during the municipal elections in Azerbaijan, which has a population of about 9 million.
9,923 observers have been registered to monitor the polling, the CEC chairman said.
