Turkish parliament not to approve Armenia accords: MP

A senior Turkish lawmaker has said the reconciliation accords signed with Armenia in 2009 will not be approved in his country’s parliament.

"As one of the persons responsible for whether or not the Turkish-Armenian protocols will be put on discussion, I can say that they will not be included in the Turkish parliament’s agenda," Volkan Bozkir, chairman of Grand National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee, told reporters on a visit to Baku.

Turkey and Armenia have been at odds for decades due to Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territory and Armenian claims on 1915 "genocide" in the Ottoman Empire. The reconciliation agreements, signed in Zurich in October 2009, require parliamentary approval. However, Turkey has assured Azerbaijan, its ally, that the protocols will not be ratified until progress is made in resolving the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. In response, Armenia suspended ratification of the protocols in April 2010.

A Turkish parliamentary delegation headed by Bozkir began holding meetings in Azerbaijan on Monday. The MPs met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov. Discussions focused on bilateral relations and inter-parliamentary ties.
