Romanian FM: Karabakh settlement important for region’s stability
Resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict is very important for long-term stability and economic development of the region, Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi has reportedly said, adding that his country backs a peaceful settlement within the mediating OSCE Minsk Group and based on international law.
"This issue concerns both sides, and we do not intend to interfere with it," Baconschi was quoted by News.am as saying following a meeting with his Armenian counterpart Edward Nalbandian in Yerevan on Wednesday. "We have to respect international norms and our desire is to see a peaceful resolution reached by the two sides, since the solution of the problem is very important in terms of long-term stability and economic development of the region."
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a brutal war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since then. Peace talks brokered by the US, Russian and French co-chairs of the Minsk Group have been largely fruitless so far.
