EU ‘wants to be more involved’ in Karabakh conflict settlement

A European Parliament member has said European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton’s upcoming visit to Yerevan and Baku once again shows the EU wants to be more involved in the region, including in the solution of "frozen" conflicts, especially the dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Kristian Vigenin told Bulgaria’s Focus news agency that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict has been "vexing the atmosphere for years".

"There is tiny progress. It seems to me a stronger EU commitment could change this," said Vigenin, who also acts as co-president of Euronest parliamentary assembly, a body of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership program.

Vigenin last week visited Armenia where he held talks with its leaders, focusing on issues including Karabakh conflict settlement. He said that before Catherine Ashton visits Yerevan and Baku this week, he will brief her on his talks held with Armenian officials.

During her three-day tour of the South Caucasus region, Ashton is due to arrive in Azerbaijan on Tuesday, visit Georgia on Wednesday and then head to Armenia.
