Int’l groups ‘failing’ to condemn destruction of Azeri monuments
International groups are failing to respond to appeals over the destruction of Azerbaijani monuments in the Armenia-controlled territories, says the leader of the Azerbaijani community of the occupied Nagorno Karabakh region.
"International organizations are avoiding the expression of their stance on these facts altogether," Bayram Safarov told reporters. "We have even appealed to the Russian Patriarch over the destruction of a mosque in Shusha [an ancient Azerbaijani town located in Nagorno Karabakh]. We have received a ridiculous answer, which suggested that the sides reach mutual understanding on the issue."
Safarov said that along with destroying Azerbaijani historical monuments in Shusha, the Armenians are trying to turn them into Armenian ones.
"Since the lands [they occupy] are not theirs, by armenianizing the monuments, they are trying to produce an impression of being ‘an ancient nation’," Safarov added.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a precarious cease-fire in 1994. Armenian armed forces have since occupied Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding Azerbaijani regions in defiance of international law. Numerous rounds of OSCE-brokered negotiations have been fruitless so far.
