Karabakh Azeris and Armenians expected to meet Nov. 28
The Azerbaijani and Armenian communities of the Armenia-occupied Nagorno Karabakh region are due to meet on November 28 in Berlin, a member of the Azerbaijani community said Thursday.
"We have always tried to conduct such meetings, but there are forces impeding them, because they know that the more [frequently] we meet, the closer we will draw to resolving the Nagorno Karabakh problem," Rovshan Rzayev, a parliament member, told a conference in Baku.
Rzayev added that some reports are circulating that the Armenian community’s members may not join the forthcoming meeting.
"But we have talked about this with the Azerbaijani embassy in Berlin, and they stated that the meeting will take place," Rzayev said.
The two communities have held several meetings to discuss Karabakh settlement so far.
Nagorno Karabakh is an Azerbaijani region occupied by Armenian forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended a war that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted up to one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. Years of OSCE-brokered peace talks have brought few tangible results.
Peace talks are underway on the basis of the Madrid principles, a peace outline proposed by US, Russian and French mediators. The Madrid Document covers a return of the territories surrounding Nagorno Karabakh to Azerbaijani control, a future determination of the region’s legal status and the right of internally displaced persons and refugees to return to their homes.
