Turkish opposition party rules out approval of Armenia accords
A representative of the Turkish main opposition party has said tabling the 2009 reconciliation accords signed with Armenia in Turkey’s parliament is impossible.
Muharrem Ince, deputy parliamentary group leader of the Republican People's Party, told the press in Baku that CHP will not allow the protocols to be included in the parliament’s agenda.
"I don’t believe the Grand National Assembly would pass any decision harming our fraternal relations with Azerbaijan," he said.
As for pressure from other countries over ratifying the accords, Ince said Turkey is "a big country and no one can press on it".
Turkey and Armenia have been at odds for decades due to Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territory and Armenian claims on 1915 "genocide" in the Ottoman Empire. The reconciliation agreements, signed by Ankara and Yerevan in Zurich in October 2009, require parliamentary approval. However, Turkey has assured Azerbaijan, its ally, that the protocols will not be ratified until progress is made in resolving the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. In response, Armenia suspended ratification of the protocols in April 2010.
