Turkic body seeks observer status in UN

The parliamentary assembly of Turkic-speaking countries, TurkPA, is working to secure observer status in the United Nations General Assembly, secretary general Ramil Hasanov has said.

Hasanov told a meeting of TurkPA’s foreign affairs commission in Baku on Thursday that the issue has been included in the UN GA agenda, and a vote on TurkPA’s election to the assembly is due in late November or early December.

Azerbaijan, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan signed an agreement to establish TurkPA in November 2008. During its first meeting held in September 2009, the secretariat of TurkPA was set up, and Ramil Hasanov was elected secretary general of the organization for four years.
