Hezbollah threatens to shut down Azeri consulate in Tabriz – reports

Hezbollah has threatened Azerbaijan with shutting down the country’s general consulate in Tabriz, Iranian media reported.

Hojatoleslam Ruhollah Bejani, secretary general of the Tabriz representation of Ansar-e-Hezbollah, Hezbollah’s Iranian arm, was quoted as saying that the organization’s members plan to protest outside the diplomatic mission on Friday. Bejani claimed that youths in Tabriz will condemn the alleged "anti-Islamic policy" pursued by Azerbaijani government, halt the consulate’s activity and remove its staff from the building.

Iran is home to about 30 million Azerbaijanis, or over 25 percent of the country’s population, which is predominantly Persian. Tabriz is one of the Iranian cities densely populated by Azerbaijanis.
