EU ready to assist Azerbaijan after its election to UNSC

The European Union has said it "stands ready" to assist Azerbaijan to meet the challenges and opportunities resulting from its new status as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

"The EU delegation looks forward to enhanced cooperation and closer dialogue on all international issues," the EU Baku office said in a statement on Friday.

Azerbaijan gained a non-permanent UN SC seat in 2012-2013 after Slovenia withdrew from the race following 16 inconclusive rounds of voting.

"In this new context, the EU Delegation welcomes the country's commitments to the United Nations' values and principles of peace and democracy which are shared by the EU," the statement says.

The Security Council is the powerhouse of the United Nations, with the ability to impose sanctions and dispatch peacekeeping forces. There are five veto-holding permanent members of the council -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China -- and 10 temporary elected members without vetoes.
